CNN —A dream trip turned into a nightmare for the 1,000 passengers on board a cruise ship that was hit in storms, injuring 100. Everything went to plan until day 10 – November 2 – when the ship was en route to Gran Canaria, as storms approached. The ship remained safe at all times, but due to the impact of the storm some guests sustained injuries. It was last tracked off the coast of southern England, having departed Portsmouth for Lisbon, according to tracking website Vesselfinder. The route will take the ship through the Bay of Biscay again – hopefully with a smoother crossing this time.

The largest island, Tenerife, received 4% more tourists in June than in the pre-pandemic 2019. But there were 22% fewer Germans, a clear sign of how the energy crisis and economic woes have weighed on travel decisions. Meanwhile, hotels in traditional hotspots for German tourists, such as the town of Puerto de la Cruz in northern Tenerife, are now filling up with "weather tourists". Read moreMADRID, July 11 (Reuters) - The Spanish coastguard rescued two Nigerian migrants who stowed away on the rudder of a ship that arrived in the Canary Islands from Togo, a coastguard spokesperson and the police said on Tuesday. After being rescued on Monday night in the port of Las Palmas, the migrants were taken to a hospital. The container ship's last stop before reaching the Spanish archipelago off the African coast was Lome, Togo's capital, said the coastguard spokesperson without elaborating. In a similar case in November last year, the Spanish coastguard rescued three African stowaways who had arrived in the Canary Islands after enduring 11 days on the rudder of a fuel tanker from Nigeria. The Spanish-owned Canary Islands are a popular but dangerous gateway for African migrants attempting to reach Europe.

The migrants were “in good health” on a rescue vessel headed for Arguineguin, a coastal town on Gran Canaria, the Spanish authorities said. They declined to specify where the migrants had traveled from but said they were sub-Saharan Africa. Little more was known about the boats reported missing in Senegal, which is about 1,000 miles away from the Canary Islands. Many migrants have died in recent years trying to cross the Atlantic and the Mediterranean in attempts to get to Europe. In one of the worst such maritime tragedies, last month a boat that set sail from Libya capsized, killing hundreds of people off the coast of Greece.
